N420 prepares prelicensure nursing students to care for adults whose pulmonary, cardiac or metabolic systems are failing, from respiratory distress and shock to trauma, burns and endocrine emergencies.

The short version

Send the exact assignment or rubric from your classroom and a custom N420 sample written to it lands in 24 to 48 hours, the first one free. N420 is Aspen’s Adult Health IV course. It centers on the care of adults in acute care with complex alterations of the pulmonary and cardiac systems, the sepsis continuum, trauma, surgical management, burns, rapid response and code teams, and endocrine emergencies. What N420 is really about

N420 is the last adult health course in Aspen's prelicensure sequence and the closest to critical care. The patients are sicker and change faster, so the course emphasizes recognizing deterioration early, acting within the nurse's role and communicating clearly with the rapid response or code team.

The course also asks students to understand why treatments work: why a patient with acute respiratory distress is ventilated with small breaths, why burn resuscitation is calculated by weight and burn size, why diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state are treated differently. That understanding is what lets a new nurse anticipate rather than react.

What N420’s assessments ask for

Expect care plans for patients on mechanical ventilation, case studies of shock and trauma, a burn fluid resuscitation paper, analyses of rapid response and code events, and priority-setting papers on endocrine emergencies.

Where students lose points in N420

Students lose marks by describing medical treatment without the nursing role, by missing early signs of deterioration, by skipping the rationale for interventions and by writing SBAR communications that bury the key finding.

Module 1

N420 Module 1 assignment example

Nursing care of a composite 44-year-old woman who develops moderate acute respiratory distress syndrome on the third day of severe gallstone pancreatitis: Berlin criteria, lung-protective ventilation at 6 mL/kg of predicted body weight, prone sessions of at least 16 hours and the pressure injury cost, sedation and paralysis, fluids, family support and a care table. Module 2

N420 Module 2 assignment example

A care plan for a composite 66-year-old man on his third day of mechanical ventilation for pneumonia, awake and trying to talk: five ranked nursing diagnoses in a care table, paired awakening and breathing trials, the 2022 prevention practices for ventilator-associated events, the ABCDEF bundle, and communication tools for a patient who cannot speak. Module 3

N420 Module 3 assignment example

Recognizing and managing cardiogenic shock in a composite 62-year-old woman four hours after stenting for an anterior heart attack: the cool, wet profile, falling urine output and a lactate of 4.1, SCAI shock stages in a table with nursing cues, first actions, vasopressors, what the balloon pump and microaxial pump trials found, and nursing care of a patient on a microaxial pump. Module 4

N420 Module 4 assignment example

The sepsis continuum in a composite 86-year-old man sent from assisted living for being not himself after two falls, with a temperature of 36.1 and a blood pressure 50 points below his usual: Sepsis-3 definitions, why fever is missing in older adults, a continuum table with his findings, hour-one care under the 2021 guidelines, fluids with reassessment, the move to septic shock, delirium and a goals-of-care conversation. Module 5

N420 Module 5 assignment example

Nursing priorities in the first 24 hours for a composite 74-year-old woman on apixaban who fell down her basement stairs and arrived talking, then declined: why anticoagulated older adults deteriorate late, the first neurological baseline, reversal as the time-critical step, blood pressure, oxygen and carbon dioxide targets, a monitoring table, preparing for surgery, seizures, glucose, sodium and the family. Module 6

N420 Module 6 assignment example

Burn injury and fluid resuscitation for a composite 38-year-old man with a 32% flash burn from a propane heater: estimating burn size, why the 2024 guideline starts at 2 mL rather than the Parkland 4 mL per kilogram per percent, the worked calculation, hourly titration to urine output, fluid creep and abdominal pressure, albumin, circumferential burns, temperature and pain, and an hourly monitoring table. Module 7

N420 Module 7 assignment example

The nurse on rapid response and code teams, traced through a composite 70-year-old woman two days after hip surgery whose missed rapid response call became a cardiac arrest: the afferent and efferent limbs of rapid response systems, code team roles in a table, the first nurse's minutes, the leader who stays hands-off, closed-loop communication, the recorder, family presence and the debrief. Module 8

N420 Module 8 assignment example

Diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state compared through two composite admissions on one night, a 24-year-old whose insulin pump failed and a 79-year-old with a week of thirst and confusion: 2024 diagnostic criteria in a table, why each crisis develops, fluids first, insulin and the potassium rule, the slower correction HHS needs, monitoring, resolution and discharge teaching. Using a N420 sample the right way

Read a finished N420 paper for how it ranks problems by threat to life and ties each nursing action to a rationale. Your case will differ, so use the example to test the logic of your own priorities.

N420 questions, answered

Is N420 the same as a critical care course?

It covers much of the same ground at a prelicensure level. Aspen's catalog lists pulmonary and cardiac alterations, sepsis, trauma, burns, rapid response and endocrine emergencies.

What does N420 build on?

Aspen's catalog says it expands on Adult Health I, II and III, so expect to use earlier medical-surgical content.

How detailed should an N420 care plan be?

Detailed enough to show assessment findings, prioritized problems, specific interventions with rationales and how you will know they worked. Follow the template in your classroom.
