DNP 820 examines the economic, financial and political forces behind health care delivery and prepares doctoral nurses to critique and influence policy.

The short version

Send the exact assignment or rubric from your classroom and a custom DNP 820 sample written to it lands in 24 to 48 hours, the first one free. DNP 820 is Aspen’s Health Policy and Advocacy course. It centers on the economic, financial and political factors that influence health care delivery, policy reform through legal, regulatory, ethical, societal and organizational contexts, critique of the policy process, and the influence of legislation and government on care. What DNP 820 is really about

Policy decides what nurses can do, what gets paid for and who gets care. DNP 820 asks you to read policy the way an analyst does: who benefits, who pays, what evidence supports the change and what politics stand in the way. It then asks what a doctoral nurse can do about it.

The course covers both legislation and regulation. Many of the rules that shape practice come from agencies rather than lawmakers, and a strong paper shows where in that process a nurse's comment, testimony or data can matter.

What DNP 820’s assessments ask for

Expect papers on a policy process model, health care economics and cost drivers, analysis of a federal law, state scope of practice, the regulatory process and public comment, ethics in policy decisions, an advocacy brief for a legislator and a full policy analysis with a recommendation.

Where students lose points in DNP 820

Marks are lost for opinion without evidence, for ignoring the opposing side, and for policy briefs that run long or bury the request. Papers that describe a law without analyzing its effects, costs or politics are incomplete.

A policy process model applied to one law: the extension of Medicaid postpartum coverage from 60 days to 12 months traced through Kingdon's three streams, maternal deaths that often came after the old cutoff, research showing 55% of new mothers covered at delivery had a coverage gap within six months, the 2021 state option and its 2023 permanence, and where nurses entered. Health care economics: why the United States spent 17.8% of its economy on health care in 2016 while using hospitals and doctors at rates similar to peer countries, administrative costs of $2,497 per person against $551 in Canada, an estimated $265.6 billion a year in administrative waste, who ends up paying, and what nurse leaders can change. Analysis of a federal law: how Congress let nurse practitioners prescribe buprenorphine in 2016, widened it to other advanced practice nurses in 2018 and removed the special waiver altogether at the end of 2022, evidence that rural waiver growth of 111% came more than half from nurse practitioners and physician assistants, state scope limits, and what the change asks of APRNs now. Module 4

State scope of practice: a composite state's full practice authority bill for nurse practitioners, the arguments each side makes, evidence from state law changes (more routine checkups, fewer avoidable emergency visits) and from 23,704 health center visits (no difference on 7 of 9 measures), the Future of Nursing report's recommendation, and the amendments that decide whether the bill passes. The regulatory process and writing a public comment: how a federal rule moves from proposal to final rule, a comment on the 2023 proposal to require 3.48 nurse staffing hours per nursing home resident per day and a registered nurse on site around the clock, the evidence behind it, and what the rule's repeal in December 2025 teaches about regulation that outruns its politics. Module 6

Ethics in policy: a composite state's crisis standards of care for ventilators and intensive care beds reviewed after the pandemic, four ethical principles for allocation (equal treatment, favoring the worst off, maximizing benefit, rewarding usefulness), a scoring framework built on organ-failure scores, disability and racial equity objections, and the revisions a nurse ethicist recommends. Module 7

An advocacy brief to a state legislator: one page asking a composite state to require every hospital to adopt and report on a sepsis protocol, built on New York's experience (3.2 percentage points lower mortality than expected by the tenth quarter, across more than a million admissions), followed by the reasoning behind each line of the brief and how it will be delivered. Module 8

A complete policy analysis: how a composite state should regulate hospital nurse staffing, four options (fixed ratios, staffing committees, public reporting, a hybrid) judged on patient outcomes, staffing effect, cost, flexibility and feasibility, evidence that ratios raised registered nurse hours by about one hour per patient day while committees and reporting alone did not, and a recommendation. Using a DNP 820 sample the right way

Use a finished DNP 820 paper to see how evidence, cost and politics are weighed together. Replace its policy with one relevant to your state and practice, since graders expect current laws and your own analysis.

DNP 820 questions, answered

How is DNP 820 different from DNP 870?

Both teach health policy and advocacy, under codes that belong to different DNP program plans. Look at your plan of study to see which code is yours.

What makes a good policy brief?

One page, a clear problem statement with data, the specific action requested, evidence for it and who you are, written for a busy legislator or staff member.

Can I write about a policy from another state?

Usually yes, but explain why it is relevant and compare it with your own state where possible. Check your classroom instructions.
